Annapurna base camp trek

Amazing sunrises and incredible mountain views
Seasoned travelers to the Himalayas will tell you that the best place to visit is not Mt. Everest; instead it is the amazing Annapurna Mountains in western Nepal. The majestic snow capped peaks offer amazing views. Poon Hill in the Annapurna’s is legendary as being the finest place to watch a Himalayan sunrise and there are beautiful lakes and waterfalls scattered all along the trail. The best overview of the amazing Annapurna’s is the Annapurna Base Camp Trek. The locals simply call this the ABC Trek and when it comes to the Himalayas, it is indeed the ABC of treks!

The Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) is a region that has been preserved by the government of Nepal for its singular beauty. Inside of ACAP are incredibly picturesque mountain villages as well as terraced farms, dense jungles, deep gorges and amazing waterfalls. Everywhere you look are outstanding views of the mighty Himalayas. There are so many peaks to view, including Mt. Annapurna I, the 10th highest mountain in the world!

Cozy Guide Nepal is pleased to be able to take you deep into the very heart of the Annapurna region. This 17- day trek will explore all that the Annapurna’s have to offer.

When you think of Nepal just remember: ABC. That’s the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, and Cozy Guide Nepal is the only company name you need to remember.

  • DAY 16 – RETURN TO KATHMANDU
  • DAY 17 – DEPARTURE
  1. DAY 1 – ARRIVAL IN KATHMANDU (elev. 1350 m/4429 ft.) The wheels touch down on the tarmac as your plane taxis down the runway at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. The ABC adventure starts at this moment as the plane taxis to a stop. Pass through passport control and get your Nepali visa upon arrival. Once you’ve picked up your luggage, you will be met by your personal representative of Cozy Guide Nepal and taken by private vehicle to your hotel to relax from your long flight.
  2. DAY 2 – SIGHTSEEING IN KATHMANDU. Take your first full day in this mountain republic to experience the unique culture and beauty of the Kathmandu Valley. The day begins when you go by private vehicle to Kathmandu’s Durbar Square where the kings of old were crowned. This is a UNESCO World Heritage site with the old royal palace and nearly 60 ancient temples. Wander down the streets and visit Freak Street which was home to the Hippies back in the late 1960s. Rock musicians like Cat Stevens and Jimi Hendrix wandered these streets writing songs and enjoying a time of free love. After Durbar Square, travel to the Chandragiri Cable Car to take a ride to the top to see a most breathtaking view of the Himalayas. From this vantage point in the Valley, you can see all the way from Mt. Everest in the east to the Annapurnas in the west as well as all the snowcapped peaks in between. Enjoy lunch up here (lunch not included in price). After lunch, travel to Swayambhu Temple, the oldest Buddhist site in Kathmandu. This impressive stupa dates back over 2000 years and is a synergy of Buddhist and Hindu temples. Swayambhu (also known as Monkey Temple) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.In the evening, return to your hotel to relax and prepare for tomorrow’s trip to Pokhara in the Annapurnas.
  3. DAY 3 - DRIVE TO POKHARA (elev. 820 m/2,690 ft.) We depart early for the Annapurna Base Camp Trek from our hotel via first class tourist bus. These luxury buses cross over the pass out of the Kathmandu Valley and work their way down the mountain to enter the Trisuli River Valley. The Trisuli River is the Himalayas most famous white-water rafting river. We follow the Trisuli to Mugling where we cross the river and head west to reach the incredible lakeside city of Pokhara. Pokhara is everyone’s favorite place. Nestled on the eastern shore of Phewa Lake, this mountain city is surrounded by the Annapurna Mountains. Check into your hotel and do some exploring alongside the lake.
  4. DAY 4 – DRIVE TO NAYAPUL (elev. 1070 m/3510 ft.) TREK TO HILE (elev. 1340 m/4396 ft.) The actual trekking of the Annapurna Base Camp Trek begins today. We take a short ride to the village of Nayapul (two-hour journey) where we start trekking. Our destination is the Gurung village of Hile where we will spend the night. It’s a short day of trekking, taking about three hours to reach the village. We pass through forests as well as by terrace farms. All along the way, we will see glimpses of the snowcapped peaks.
  5. DAY 5 – TREK TO GHOREPANI (elev. 2860 m/9,383 ft.) Today’s trail starts out level, but when you reach the village of Tikhedunga and cross the suspension bridge, it’s uphill again. We are gaining in elevation as we climb the stone steps that have been placed by the local people to help them travel faster in the mountains. These trails are the “highways” of the Annapurnas as there are no roads into the interior of ACAP. Our destination is the village of Ghorepani which is located on the old Salt Trail that connected Nepal with Tibet. Travelers would stop here to water their horses (hence the name Ghorepani. The name means horse water. Ghorepani is composed of the Magar people, who like the Gurungs made up the bulk of the famous Gurkha soldiers. Trekking time is 5 – 6 hours.
  6. DAY 6 – POON HILL SUNRISE, TREK TO TADAPANI (elev. 2630 m/8,629 ft.) The day starts early on the ABC Trek as we rise before breakfast to make a 45-minute ascension to the top of Poon Hill (elev. 3210 m/10,531 ft.) Poon Hill is the most famous spot in the Himalayas to see magnificent sunrises. We arrive before sunrise to stand there and watch the first of the morning rays turn the snowcapped peaks from grey to a bright reddish orange. The colors change quickly as the effulgent sun rises in the sky, turning the reddish orange peaks to a brilliant white. It is a sight to behold! After sunrise, we take breakfast and move on to the trail to our next destination: Tadapani. Today we will see truly great views of Mt. Dhaulagiri, the 7th highest mountain in the world which lies west of the Annapurnas. Trekking time is 5 – 6 hours.
  7. DAY 7 – TREK TO CHHOMRONG (elev. 2170 m/7,119 ft.) The mountain of the day is definitely Mt. Machhapuchhre. Better known by its English name Fishtail Mountain it looks like an upended fish. (The name Machhapuchhre means fish tail in Nepali). We will have great views of this landmark peak today as we make our way to the village of Chhomrong to spend the night. Trekking time is 5 – 6 hours.
  8. DAY 8 – TREK TO BAMBOO (elev. 2310 m/7,579 ft.) The ABC trek goes in a north-easterly direction taking on small hill rises along the trail which is a nice break from the previous days of climbing. The trail joins up with the Modi Khola River as we make our way to the village of Bamboo for the night. Trekking time is about 5 hours.
  9. DAY 9 – TREK TO DEURALI (elev. 3230 m/10,597 ft.) We reach today the village of Deurali today, having enjoyed impressive views of Mt. Annapurna South and Mt. Hiun Chuli. We pass the sacred cave of Hinku before arriving at our destination to spend the night. Trekking time is 5 -6 hours.
  10. DAY 10 – ACCLIMATIZATION DAY The high altitude of this trek requires us to take a day to adjust to the thinner mountain air. AMS (Acute Mountain sickness) is a real illness and can be fatal if not dealt with properly. Fortunately, the best prevention is to allow one’s body to adjust to the higher altitudes by taking a day to adjust to the thinner air. It will be an opportunity to do some day hiking as well as spending time with the locals.
  11. DAY 11 – TREK TO MACHHAPURCHRE BASE CAMP (elev. 3700 m/12,139 ft.) The ABC Trek now makes its way to Machhapuchhre Base Camp (MBC) where we will spend the night at the tea house. These are the last of the forests along the way as we continue to make our way above the tree line. All through the day, we enjoy incredible views of the Annapurna's. Trekking time is 5 – 6 hours.
  12. DAY 12 – TREK TO ABC (elev. 4130 m/13,550 ft.) Today we reach our destination: Annapurna Base Camp! It is here that those climbing Annapurna I begin their climbs. We won’t be climbing the 10th highest mountain in the world, but from here, we have the most incredible views of the Annapurna Mountains. From ABC, we can see Annapurna South, Annapurna I, several awesome glaciers as well as so many other snow capped peaks. The horizon just explodes in vivid scenes with the snow capped peaks contrasting boldly against the cobalt blue skies of the Himalayas. We will spend the night here at a tea house as we watch the sun go down on these massive peaks. Trekking time is 4 -5 hours.
  13. DAY 13 – TREK BACK TO BAMBOO (elev. 2310 m/7,579 ft.) The return trip for the ABC Trek begins today, but only after we watch the effulgent sun rise above the mountains. We left the forests a couple of days ago, but now we welcome back the green trees and are happy to see villages once more. Trekking time is 7 – 8 hours.
  14. DAY 14 – TREK TO JINU DANDA (elev. 1780 m/5,840 ft.) We are certainly dropping in elevation today as we make our way to the refreshing hot springs of Jinu Danda. It’s a five-hour journey and at Jinu Danda, we will spend the night as well as have an opportunity to enjoy the hot springs.
  15. DAY 15 – TREK TO NAYAPUL (elev. 1070 m/3,510 ft.), DRIVE TO POKHARA It’s the final day of trekking as we travel to the village of Nayapul. It will take us around eight hours to reach Nayapul where we board our transportation back to Pokhara (two-hour journey). Once we arrive in Pokhara, we will check into a nice hotel where we can get a nice, hot shower as well as enjoy the scenic views.
  16. DAY 16 – RETURN TO KATHMANDU Our journey now takes the luxury bus along the return route through the Trisuli River Valley until we reach Kathmandu. We will spend the night at a good hotel.
  17. DAY 17 – DEPARTURE The Annapurna Base Camp Trek comes to an end today as you are taken by private vehicle to the airport to catch your flight to your next destination. Before leaving, be sure to talk to your friends at Cozy Guide Nepal about other trekking and travel possibilities in and around the Himalayas.
