Ruby Valley Trekking

Ruby valley Trekking is in Nepal’s most pristine alpine region.

Nestled just west of Kathmandu is the region called Ruby Valley It is so named because it is the only place in Nepal where beautiful commercial grade rubies are found. Here the beautiful snow capped peaks of the Ganesh Himal Range rise majestically into the brilliant blue skies of the Himalayas. In the deep valley below lie some quaint little villages, one fantastic hot spring, amazing waterfalls and a roaring river that forms this deep valley.Ruby Valley has only been discovered as a trekking destination in just the past few years. The area has hardly been touched by the influx of tourism. Here you find local hospitality and incredibly low prices.Because this is a new trekking area, there are no resorts or fancy hotels in the area. Instead, you stay with families who will cook you delicious Nepali dinners and offer you hospitality like you’ve never experienced before. The Upper Valley is primarily inhabited by the Tamang and Gurung people. These are the indigenous mountain people who have called these mountains home for over a thousand years. They farm on their small, traditional farms that terrace the hillsides, creating flat land in a place where flat land is almost non-existent.

Pang Sang Pass 3830m is an incredible mountain pass that you will cross to reach the Valley. From its lofty heights you will see the Himalayas in all four directions, including the mountains in Tibet. The panoramic view from this viewpoint is second to none for amazing beauty in all of Nepal.

Ruby Valley so far is where few trekkers actually go, but that is changing as more and more visitors to Nepal have discovered this pristine trekking land.Cozy Guide Nepal is proud to be able to be one of the few companies that have qualified to bring visitors to this incredible place. It is the Nepal of 50 years ago that you will encounter, a true step back in time. Isn’t it time to discover Ruby Valley for yourself?

In the evening, spend some time with your guide at a welcome dinner where you will enjoy traditional Nepali food and a cultural program.
  • DAY 02 – TRAVEL AROUND THE KATHMANDU VALLEY This day is one of orientation. We begin with a trip to Chandragiri Hills Cable Car where you will see the Himalayas from one of the finest vantage points in all of the Kathmandu Valley. The cable car is new, and has been delighting visitors since it was opened in 2016. We will spend the morning here.In the afternoon, visit two of the seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites. We start out with a visit to Swayambhu (also known as Monkey Temple). This holy site is over 2000 years old and a must for Buddhist pilgrims coming to the Kathmandu Valley. After Swayambhu, we will visit Kathmandu’s Durbar Square with its nearly 60 temples and old royal palace. It was here that the kings of Nepal were crowned for centuries. The temples date back hundreds of years. There is also the palace of The Living Goddess. Every few years, a young girl is declared a goddess through a very rigid and time honored ceremony, and she serves in that capacity until the time of puberty. She does make appearances at certain times of the day and if we are lucky, we will be able to see her.In the evening, prepare for tomorrow’s journey as we start our way toward Ruby Valley.
  • DAY 03 – TRAVEL TO SHYABRU BESI (elev. 1503 m/4931 ft.) We journey by local bus (private car is available at a slightly extra charge) northward from Kathmandu. The Trisuli is world famous as a whitewater rafting river. The journey will go through beautiful little mountain villages as we make our way northward. We will see some of the awesome Langtang Mountains, even entering a corner of Langtang National Park. The journey takes around 8 hours to reach Shyabru Besi which is a wonderful little village on the confluence of the Bhore Koshi River and the Langtang Khola. We will spend the night here in a nice, local hotel before we start our journey into Ruby Valley tomorrow.
  • DAY 0 4 – JOURNEY TO GATLANG (elev. 2238 m/7,342 ft.) The trekking begins today as we make our way up the side of the hill to reach the village of Gatlang. It’s a beautiful six hour trek. The first part of the trek is probably the hardest as we are making our way uphill. Once we reach the top of the hill, it is what we call “Nepali level” (up and down). We see a few villages along the way as we pass through jungles. There are beautiful wildflowers and some farms. Take a good look at the farms because we won’t be seeing many more of them until we enter Ruby Valley.Gatlang is a Tamang Village built on the side of the hill facing the Himalayas. The village has adapted a community tourism approach and is on the Tamang Heritage Trail. We will spend the night in Gatlang enjoying traditional Tamang hospitality. Trekking time is around 6 hours.
  • Day 05 Pangsang Pass to Tipling (lunch ) - Shertung 1875m/ 6188Ft. 5-6 hrs Descend to Tipling, a large village that hosts two Buddhist gombas and both a Protestant and Catholic church. Along a ridge top to the east is a gomba and cremation ground for both Buddhists and Christians lined with colorful flags. Being a majority of Tamang people it has beautiful Tamang culture show. Descend to cross the Adha Khola on a box bridge and ascend to the sister villages of Shertung and Chalish, regally overlooking the fertile river valley and abundant fields. Shertung is inhabited mainly by Tamang. The name Shertung means 'place of gold'. According to a legend , two brothers in search of gold were led here by a dream and thus the settlement was born. Tamang people have own rich culture to show for the visitors jhankri or shaman dance, ghode or horse dance, said to have been brought from Tibetan culture long ago. Jhankri (shaman) activity is robust in this territory with the worship of natural forces and indigenous local deities interwoven with Hindu and Buddhist practices. Holy Chyamra dandd, Fyanchyat monastery and Sajyat are the main holy attraction of the village. Spectacular mountain view of Lapsang Karpo, Ganesh Himal (Yangri) as well as Ganesh II and III can be seen from this village.
