Tsum valley trek

Hidden away on the border between Tibet and Nepal is an amazingly beautiful place called Tsum Valley. Closed to the outside world until 2008, this land preserves the most unique of Tibetan culture anywhere in the world.

Tsum Valley is nestled between the Ganesh Himal Mountains to the south, the mountains of Tibet to the north and Mt. Manaslu, the 8th highest mountain in the world to the west. You enter this secret valley through a narrow gorge before the valley opens up before you to a world like nothing else you’ve ever seen.

The people of Tsum Valley came here over 1000 years ago from Tibet. They converted to Buddhism while in Tsum Valley and practice a lifestyle that includes eating no meat or fish. (Before this, they were cannabises!) They have recently renewed this agreement as a community for another 300 years. Because of their commitment to peace, the wild animals are not afraid to come up to you and have a very little fear of humans.

Tsum Valley features amazing mountain views in addition to its culture. The people here are extremely friendly and helpful to visitors. Don’t be surprised if they stop to chat with you while trekking or even invite your into their homes for tea or locally made roxy, which is an alcoholic drink enjoyed by the local people. Tsum Valley features the most authentic of the ancient Tibetan culture that you will find nowhere else in the world today. People who take the Tsum Valley Trek come away totally charmed by the hospitality as well as the beauty of the region. Most people will actually say that they prefer the Tsum Valley Trek to treks to both Everest and Annapurna.

Why not discover the Tsum Valley difference for yourself? This 18 day trek is considered a moderate trek which can be done by most anyone who is in good physical shape.  Cozy Guide Nepal is the company to take you into the Tsum Valley region.

Once you have obtained your Nepal visa (available at the airport) and picked up your luggage, you will be met by your personal representative of Cozy Guide Nepal and taken by private vehicle to your hotel. Relax as you unwind from the long flight
  • DAY 2 – TOUR OF KATHMANDU VALLEY Today you become personally acquainted with the unique culture of Nepal and the Himalayas. You will be taken by private vehicle to several of the seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites. But first, take a cable car trip up to Chandragiri where you will be treated to one of the most magnificent views of the Himalayas. From here on a clear day you will see all the way from Mt. Everest in the east to Mt. Manaslu and Mt. Annapurna I in the west. These three mountains are over 8000 meters and are three of the highest mountains in the world. From Chandragiri, travel to Boudhanath, the largest Buddhist stupa in Asia as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This impressive Buddhist stupa is located next to the largest Tibetan refugee community in Nepal where you will learn more about the uniqueness of Tibetan Buddhism. This will help prepare you for the Tsum Valley experience. From here, take a short journey to Pashupatinath, the most sacred Hindu Temple in Nepal and one of the most sacred Hindu shrines in the world. In the evening, rest and prepare for the start of tomorrow’s trek.
  • DAY 3 – TRAVEL TO SOTI KHOLA (elev. 700 m/2,297 ft.) The Tsum Valley Trek begins early today as you leave your hotel in Kathmandu and cross the pass out of the Kathmandu Valley. The road winds its way down into the Trisuli River Valley. We will cross Nepal’s most famous white-water rafting river and drive to Araghat Bazar where we cross the Budhi Gandaki River and then make our way to the end of the road at the pretty little village of Soti Khola. Here we will spend the night at a local guest house. Travel time is seven hours.
  • DAY 4 – TREK TO MACHHAKHOLAGAON (elev. 865 m/2,838 ft.) For the next several days, we will be going due north, following the Budhi Gandaki River which flows over rapids and snakes its way southward to meet up with the mighty Trisuli River. The Tsum Valley Trek is only accessible by following this beautiful river which is a major watershed of the Himalayas. We will get our first good views of Mt. Manaslu, the 8th highest mountain in the world. Today’s destination is the picturesque little village of Machhakholagaon where we will find a nice guest house with very good food. Trekking time is 5 – 6 hours.
  • DAY 5 – TREK TO JAGAT (elev. 1370 m/4,495 ft.) 6-7 hours The Tsum Valley Trek continues northward as we rise significantly in elevation. The trail passes along steps and past Mani Walls, which are walls carved with inscriptions honoring Buddhism. Donkey trains pass frequently as these trails are literally the “highways” of the Himalayas. The donkeys carry goods in and out of the mountains and are the supply line for the local people. We will reach the beautiful stone village of Jagat with its flagstone streets. It’s all foot traffic here as we walk along these ancient paths. Trekking time is 5 – 6 hours.
  • DAY 6 – TREK TO LOKPA (elev. 2240 m/7,349 ft.) We rise early and take a long suspension bridge over the Budhi Gandaki as we start to climb upwards to reach the village of Philim. This is the last village of any size that we will see as we make our way to Tsum Valley. The trail runs high along the east side of the river as the trail is cut into the cliffs. Look down on the river; often there are eagles soaring below you on the thermals that rise from the Budhi Gandaki. The river continues to narrow until we come to the confluence of the Syar and Budhi Gandaki rivers. Here we turn right and begin to follow the Syar River through dense forests of pine. Our destination is Lopka, a tiny little village that is the gateway to Tsum Valley. There is only one guest house here, and it will be our home for the night. . Trekking time is 6 – 7 hours.
  • DAY 7 – TREK TO CHUMCHET (elev. 2386 m/7,828 ft.) We are now trekking eastward into Tsum Valley. From Lopka, we will drop into the Syar River Gorge to follow this very narrow trail next to the waterfalls and rapids of the river. This narrow entrance to Tsum Valley is what helped to keep it isolated from the outside world for centuries as many a traveler missed what often looked like an insignificant animal track. Your guide knows the way as you reach the bottom of the gorge, and then rise again in elevation. Today, there are no villages until you reach Chumchet in Lower Tsum Valley. The only little place to stop for even a cup of tea is a little place called Gumlung where there is only a single building where you can buy tea, Chinese beer and Coca Cola. Our destination is Chumchet which is also a small village, with amazing views of the snowcapped peaks all around you. Trekking time is 5 – 6 hours.
  • DAY 8 – TREK TO LAMAGAON (elev. 3302 m/10,833 ft.) Today you will follow high above the Syar River until you reach Domje village. From here, climb the steps that lead out of the Lower Tsum Valley to Upper Tsum Valley. The Tsum Valley Trek leads through dense forests. Behind you are excellent views of Mt. Manaslu to the west. Your journey takes you eastward. Once you reach the Upper Valley, you will discover beautiful farmlands that are separated by low rock walls. The Upper Valley has a number of small villages, all connected on a single trail. Apples grow here, along with buckwheat and potatoes. Pass through the largest village of Chhokang Paro as you make your way to Lamagaon. Our destination is a wonderful little guest house where the owner and his family offer wonderful hospitality. Their home is very typical of the Tibetan people of Tsum Valley. The place is enclosed with the animals sleeping in the lower levels while the upper levels are where the people live. Their menu is limited, but the food is good and the hospitality like nothing else you have ever experienced. Trekking time is 7 – 8 hours.
  • DAY 9 – TREK TO MU GOMPA (elev. 3700 m/12,139 ft.) We leave our friends at Lamagaon and make our way up the trail to the Buddhist Monastery of Mu Gompa. There is a large monastery near Lamagaon called Rachen Gompa that contains cells for 113 monks and nuns. The same lama that is in charge of Rachen Gompa is also in charge of Mu Gompa, which features places for visitors to stay. The trail rises with more great views of the snowcapped peaks. To our immediate south is the Ganesh Himal Mountain Range with its five massive peaks that contrast beautifully against the vibrant blue Himalayan skies. Trekking time is 6 – 7 hours.
  • DAY 10 – EXPLORE MU GOMPA We’ve reached our destination of Mu Gompa where we will spend the day exploring this beautiful monastery along with learning more about uniqueness of Tibetan Buddhism. We can try meditating, meet some of the leading gurus and lamas as well as enjoy the most beautiful of Himalayan scenery.
  • DAY 11 – TREK TO CHHOKANG PARO (elev. 3030 m/9,941 ft.)/strong> It’s downhill today as we leave Mu Gompa and make our way back down the trail to the largest village in Tsum Valley – Chhokang Paro. Along the way, we will pass a number of small monasteries which serve as focal points for worship by the people of the Valley. If our trip coincides with the apple harvests, we will be able to enjoy the very delicious variety of apples that grow up here. Trekking time is 6 – 7 hours.
  • DAY 12 – TREK TO CHUMCHET (elev. 2386 m/7,828 ft.) Today the Tsum Valley Trek leaves the upper valley and makes its way back to Chumchet. The guest house here is rather basic, but the food is good and views are magnificent here. Trekking time is 6 – 7 hours.
  • DAY 13 – TREK TO LOPKA (elev. 2240 m/7,349 ft.) Our journey takes us back through the impressive Syar River gorge that serves as the entrance to Tsum Valley. We make our way back to Lopka as the owner and his daughters at the guest house welcome us back. Trekking time is 5 – 6 hours.
  • DAY 14 – TREK TO PHILIM (elev. 1570 m/5,151 ft.) Sadly we leave Tsum Valley today, walking through dense pine forests to reach the Budhi Gandaki River once more. Our destination is the village of Philim which is located high above the river. Here we can find a good guest house and a bath along with some good food. Trekking time is 5 – 6 hours.
  • DAY 15 – TREK TO MACCHAKHOLAGAON (elev. 865 m/2,838 ft.) We drop in elevation and cross the Budhi Gandaki River, making our way southward until we reach the village of Macchakholagaon. Trekking time is 6 – 7 hours.
  • DAY 16 – TREK TO SOTI KHOLA (elev. 700 m/2,297 ft.) it’s our final day of trekking on the Tsum Valley Trek as we make our way through groves of coffee trees to reach the trail head at Soti Khola where we will spend the night. Trekking time is 5 – 6 hours
  • DAY 17 – DRIVE TO KATHMANDU Our trekking is over and today we ride back to Kathmandu where we can check into our hotel and enjoy a hot shower and a good bed. It’s been a fun and memorable excursion; tonight is a great night to relax.
  • DAY 18 – DEPARTURE Your guide at Cozy Guide Nepal will take you by private vehicle to catch your flight to your next destination. Before leaving, be sure to talk with your new friends at Cozy Guide Nepal about a return trip to Nepal to explore other amazing places to see and do.
